The old 45-person cable car in Garmisch from the valley up to the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak and a glacier ski area, will be replaced this season by a smart new one with 120-person cabins and panoramic views through floor‑to‑ceiling windows.
It will have over double the hourly capacity of the old cable car, cutting queueing times to ride down as well as up (there is no piste back down). The cable car ride is nearly 4.5km long, takes 10 minutes and will set three new world firsts. It will have the world’s tallest cable car support pylon, measuring 127m high; the world’s biggest vertical rise, of 1,945m over one section; and the world’s longest unsupported span, covering 3,213m.
